Health and sports

Following the COVID-19 pandemic, health issues have moved more into the centre of our society. The consequences of the lockdown have put a particular focus on mental health for many of us. But what does a healthy lifestyle mean to you? How can sport, nutrition, environment and spirituality support you? What do governments need to do so that everyone in society can benefit from better health? What should our health system look like in the future?

In the past year, thousands of young people have shared their ideas on how to be healthier and build stronger links between sport and wellbeing. Now is the time to put the spotlight on local organisations, projects and individuals who are addressing these issues.

Enhancing Obesity Prevention in Schools

Propose an educational program aimed at promoting awareness among children and teenagers (aged 6-15) about the somatic and psychological consequences of obesity. This program should be developed by healthcare professionals such as doctors and psychologists, with the intention of distributing it within schools, aiming to combat school bullying and discrimination.

Make sports more inclusive

Invest in sports, create ways to make sure people with disabilities don’t get excluded. Create scholarships for elite athletes that are enrolled in university, make sure people know that you can pursue a double career (sports and study) and give them the opportunity to do so (tutors and online registration helps). Make sure that sports is not seem as something that takes time away but something useful for people’s well-being

More flexibility for students suffering from chronic diseases!

It is important to let tutors and teachers have more discretion in rules that students have to follow, but are almost always discriminating to people with disabilities. For example, I have been chronically ill for 6 years, so to adhere to attendance rules is very difficult. Even when I’m a good student and do what I need to do, I still fail classes due to these inconveniences that apply for all.  Less attendance, however, will not impact the meaning of my degree in University. Disabilities are not always visible or known. Chronic illness is also a disability so please let them have more rights instead of having to beg for another chance or whatever. Being ill takes enough time as it is.

More inclusivity and awareness of having people with chronic diseases in the workplace

The EU needs to act on making workplaces more inclusive of people with chronic illnesses such as multiple sclerosis.

We have a lot of data with the benefits of having a person with diagnoses as a worker. To have a job is a huge thing for every person, but especially for a person who is facing some diagnosis. 2024 is a crucial year in terms of improve the level of education, to improve the situation with the awareness about diseases, in this case, multiple sclerosis. Are there projects already on this topic? Yes, but I want to see a project on an EU level where each country can benefit from the project, to have the same awareness level and knowledge as in Belgium and Croatia. Some improvements have already been made, but there is a need for more, where people with chronic illnesses can advocate for our disease and our needs.

Include Patients' Voices in Research

The inclusion of patients' voices in research is a vital step towards achieving a more patient-centered approach to healthcare. By actively involving patients in the research process, we can gain valuable insights and perspectives that enrich our understanding of healthcare issues, treatment outcomes, and quality of care. This idea aims to promote patient engagement in research and foster collaborative partnerships between researchers and patients. Patient engagement ensures a holistic understanding of healthcare issues, aligning research objectives with patient needs and priorities. In addition, patients' input refines methodologies, resulting in patient-centered and culturally sensitive research designs. Let's come together and advocate for a more inclusive research environment that actively involves patients.

Promote the practice of wild camping in Europe

One of the significant challenges faced by individuals, particularly young people with limited financial resources, when engaging in hiking activities in Europe, pertains to securing suitable accommodations. In most European countries, this practice is currently prohibited, with severe penalties imposed for non-compliance. Simultaneously, the escalating costs of hotels, motels, cottages, and campsites each year render even the most fundamental form of travel highly inaccessible to young individuals and economically disadvantaged households; wild camping on its own does not ruin or disrupt the environment in any way, it has no effect on the wildlife or any plant life, it's actually even more eco friendly than traditional holidays.

A credit value for students in sports

I suggest the implementation of an idea that targets universities across European countries, particularly in the fields of health and sports. The core concept revolves around assigning a designated credit value, ranging from 0.5 to 1.5 ECTS (European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System), to students enrolled in faculty programs who actively engage in sports throughout each academic semester. This proposal aims to address sedentary lifestyles and foster healthy habits among young individuals, as sedentary behavior poses a significant challenge in developing countries. Within the European Union, several nations exhibit low levels of youth involvement in sports. By embracing this approach, faculties can actively encourage and facilitate the integration of physical activities within university campuses, thereby contributing to the overall well-being of students. One viable strategy for implementing this initiative involves faculties seeking funding specifically created for this purpose and subsequently establishing appropriate infrastructure and resources to support active health practices on their campuses.

An EU-wide labelling scheme on PFAS

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl compounds (PFAS) are often associated with us. To prevent the negative effects of PFAS on our health and the environment, an EU-wide labeling requirement should be introduced. This would allow us to know whether the products we use contain PFAS, and whether they pose a risk to our health or the environment. PFAS have been linked to health risks such as cancer and liver injury, and they also pollute the environment, including groundwater. Due to their longevity, they can cause significant damage to the environment. Despite the known health and environmental risks, nothing has been done to prevent the use of PFAS. Therefore, my appeal is for an EU-wide labelling scheme to be implemented to increase transparency. This would provide us with the necessary information to make informed choices about the products we use, and encourage manufacturers to seek alternative, safer ingredients. Ultimately, this would help protect both our health and the environment.

E-mobility EU common charging infrastructure

When it comes to the electrification of our mobility infrastructure, too much focus has been placed on electric vehicles (EVs) and the required EV charging infrastructure. However, e-bikes and e-scooters are 15 time more energy efficient than EVs (meter*passenger/jules) as the car requires more energy to move unnecessary mass, moreover more than half of all the daily trips are less than 3 miles, thus easily sustituible for e-mobility options. Besides this remarkable advantages, there is little political interest in promoting and developing infrastructure for this efficient means of transport. We need an EU wide common docking and charging stations for light e-mobility vehicles, allowing every e-bike producer to design its e-bikes and scooters comply with EU docking and charging standards in every EU27 member states. This infrastructure will lead to an uptake in e-mobility, allowing private owners to secure and charge their e-bikes in the street, reduce the disarray of renting e-bikes and scooters in the cities by providing a designated docking space as well as reduce e-mobility companies operational costs, thus reducing prices and increasing consumers demand.

Rights imply, or would like better, an individual’s obligations towards the state and society. The average age in the European Parliament should be lowered to hear people under the age of 25 by setting the age limit at 18 years. These people will follow the same political process, so there is no question of immaturity when someone is voted by almost 80.000 people in each. Rights are therefore only guaranteed by pluralism and the full potential of dialogue.

There is no health without sport

Our mission is to leave a less polluted planet for future generations than we all have found, highlighting once again the fundamental value of health. If we talk about health, we cannot ignore sport. We want to introduce an idea of sustainable sport that can be practised consciously and benefit the individual and its surroundings. We would like to create equipment to further raise awareness among the community, governments and organisations about the true concept of health, the real concept of practising sport and the true concept of safeguarding the ecosystem, knowing that sport cannot be practised in a compromised environment and that in turn it also undermines health.

Endometriosis is a debilitating disease that affects over 190 million people worldwide. We need political action now.

Endometriosis is a debilitating disease that affects over 190 million people worldwide. This condition causes severe cramps, chronic pain, and infertility, and patients often wait for a decade before receiving a proper diagnosis. Despite its prevalence, the disease's cause remains unknown, and treatments primarily focus on managing symptoms. The lack of political action on this issue in the EU is unacceptable. Millions of people in Europe are suffering from the disease, impacting their well-being, job prospects, and educational opportunities. We cannot allow this situation to continue. We must take immediate action to create a European Endometriosis Strategy to improve the lives of millions of patients in Europe. By collaborating on awareness campaigns, supporting joint research projects between member states, and establishing a joint endometriosis data warehouse, we can work towards a brighter future for endometriosis patients throughout Europe. The suffering of these patients should not be ignored any longer. It is time for the EU to prioritize endometriosis research and support those who are affected by this disease. Together, we can make a difference and create a better future for all those impacted by endometriosis in Europe.

Create awareness around the consequences of excessive screen time

Screens are the new addiction, and like any addiction, there are side effects to their use that we cannot neglect, for everyone's sake.

With hate speech, low self-esteem, and misinformation circulating online, teenagers and adults must be aware of the risks online and ensure they can accept the risks before going online. Children and young people should be aware of how excessive screen time seriously impacts their psychological and emotional well-being. The solution to it could be:

  • to create an evidence-based awareness campaign
  • to introduce mandatory lessons within the school curriculum to raise awareness about screen time
  • to enhance security of online activities: we need more verification when users create social media accounts to avoid lies about identity and age. All accounts creators should go through extensive checks. Even if the process is long and annoying, it comes down to protecting lives
  • to limit the practice of online gaming. Video game apps should create a system where children under 13 years old have a limited online game by verification of age

Universal healthcare: Healthcare and drugs should be affordable and accessible to all EU citizens

Every citizen should be guaranteed a minimum level of healthcare, regardless of income or EU passport. All Europeans should have access to great healthcare, whether rich or poor. All countries must be equipped to provide this for their people. The EU needs a universal healthcare system.

Every citizen should be guaranteed a minimum level of healthcare, regardless of income or EU passport. We need to guarantee:

  • fair and standardised pricing for drugs across Europe
  • equal access to innovative treatments and life-saving drugs
  • similar waiting times for operations and procedures
  • equal and fair COVID-19 follow-up care, for everyone who contracted the disease

It has been a year of turmoil for our healthcare systems amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Wouldn't it be a great source of resilience to hold EU Member States to a certain standard of healthcare and help to fund this throughout the region in the case of future virus outbreaks? The EU needs a universal healthcare system with a shared budget, to which all Member States contribute. This budget should service equal wages for healthcare workers and an equal level of care for all European citizens.

Je suis d'accord, on devrait pouvoir faciliter l'accessibilité aux médicaments dans toute l'UE.

Fani-Christina Papacharalampous  • 30 March 2023

The idea of a universal healthcare system in the EU is a complex and controversial one, and it is important to consider the many challenges that would need to be overcome in order to make it a reality.

One of the key challenges would be ensuring that all EU Member States have the capacity to provide a minimum level of healthcare for their citizens, as well as the necessary infrastructure, funding, and healthcare workers. This would likely require significant investment from the EU as well as from Member States, which could be difficult to secure in the current economic climate.
Another challenge would be to ensure that the system is fair and equitable, with equal access to life-saving drugs and treatments, and similar waiting times for procedures. This would require standardization of drug prices across the EU, as well as the development of a common approach to healthcare provision that takes into account the needs and resources of different Member States.Despite these challenges, there are also many potential benefits to a universal healthcare system in the EU. For example, a shared budget and equal standards of care could help to ensure that all Europeans have access to high-quality healthcare, regardless of their income or nationality. This could improve public health and resilience, as well as helping to reduce disparities in health outcomes between different parts of the EU.
In conclusion, the idea of a universal healthcare system in the EU is a complex and challenging one, but it is also one that has the potential to bring many benefits to European citizens. A careful and thoughtful approach will be required to overcome the challenges and realize the potential of this idea.

Teach health professionals about patient rights and human rights

We need to educate our health professionals about human rights in medicine so patients are not violated.

We need more education about human rights in medicine: there are too many health professionals who refuse to care about LGBT+ patients and violate the rights of women in the postnatal period with malpractices such as the 'husband stitch', a medically unnecessary extra stitch after birth. In addition, a significant number of health practitioners still refuse the right to abortion or contraceptives.

We need a clear and defined mental health pact

Our health system must concentrate more on mental health. The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that dealing with mental health issues is a luxury that not many people can afford. We need a mental health pact to organise our resources and tackle mental health issues within our global community.

Measures to be taken should aim to tackle the stigma that currently surrounds mental health.

The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that dealing with mental health issues is a luxury not many people can afford. We need a mental health pact to organise our resources and tackle mental health issues within our community. Health is more than just physical health: citizens need to understand that there are many ways to be healthy - and mental health is one of them.

The continued uncertainty of 2020 and 2021 is compounded by the longer uncertainty of climate change. For this reason, it is necessary for the European Union to sign and promote a mental health pact, promising to use resources to tackle mental health. We need to:

  • tackle the stigma that surrounds mental health
  • treat mental health in schools and teach children how to seek help for a variety of mental health issues
  • provide psychological support to vulnerable groups, such as those adversely affected by the pandemic and by climate change. This should be subsidised by national authorities and the EU
  • subsidise treatment, including therapy
  • fund positions for more psychologists within national public health systems
  • ensure employers provide necessary paid leave for mental illness

Another measure which would allow us to concentrate more on mental health would be to create an online website where practical help and contact information can be found.

The idea is interesting, although any introduction of this type of option involves costs. In Polish schools, there is no funding for Xero paper for students (this happens in virtually all schools) so that each class has to provide a ribbon of paper for every teacher. Sound budget management is very important, so such an option should only be considered if the number of people with vegetarian diets would be the minimum in relation to the cost-effectiveness of introducing this idea in public institutions.

Make digital healthcare a priority

While so much is becoming digitised, when it comes to healthcare, digital access is falling behind.

Patients' needs should be the centrepiece in digital healthcare. While so much is becoming digitalised, when it comes to healthcare, digital access is falling behind. The pandemic has catapulted digital healthcare into society, however young patients with a chronic disease need to see digitalisation implemented to facilitate and improve access to care.

The future of healthcare in Europe should include video consultations with the best doctors across country borders, digital health records and EU-wide electronic prescriptions, to make travel and quality of life better.

We need a European registry for illnesses, so we know where diseases appear, who is affected, and what treatments are most effective. Many patients do not know the survival rate of certain illnesses or if certain treatments come with risks that could threaten their health in other ways.

In this way, young people can feel confident to work and travel across borders with the knowledge that their healthcare remains accessible.

It is also vital that digital care does not replace in-person care and does not leave behind those who require a physical appointment.

Together with the necessary push for digitalisation, it is crucial to pay serious attention to access to health. Although most people now have a device connected to the internet, they do not speak of the whole population; in addition, it is necessary to implement massive digital literacy programmes for those who, while possessing a device, are unable to make adequate use of the services. A significant number of scientific and social research studies stress the importance of sex education at secondary school level. Young teenagers are in need of practical and factual information.

In some communities, issues linked to sexuality are taboo and people don't discuss them in homes, schools and centres. Now, as a result, teenagers are in danger of sexually transmitted infections, mental illness, and chronic health problems as well as of LGBTQ discrimination and school bullying.

One of the challenges here is a lack of teachers who possess the necessary knowledge and training to distribute appropriate and correct information about sex and reproductive health. Additional barriers include opposition from cultural and religious leaders, as well as the absence of sex and reproductive health education generally, both at a local and EU level.

Let's unify and provide teachers with the right information, backed by scientists and health specialists, as a starting point.

The nurse perspective was right according to the situation. She is not an expert in the mental side of sexuality, as many more healthcare worker, so she discussed the practical and ethical side. When we are talking about reproduction and sex education, we want to avoid the not planned pregnancies and infections, that is our top priority.
For the mental side, it is necessary another specialist, a psychologist who have better understanding in this topic. This should be discussed too, but not in exchange to have less discussion in the practical, medical part.
